On November 12, 2019, the West Coast rapper and Death Row Records Alum was pronounced dead in his cell at Riverside County Jail in Blythe, California. He was awaiting arraignment for a Domestic Violence incident at the time of the announcement.
Born Jamarr Stamps on November 27, 1975, in Hawaiian Gardens, California he shot into the hip hop scene by rapping at house parties growing up. Through doing this he came to the attention of the LBC crew, an act that was executive produced by LBC legend Snoop Dogg himself. He garnered critical attention in 1996 as a guest feature on 2pac Shakur’s song, “Krazy” off of his Makaveli album. He was briefly signed to Doggystyle Records where he made numerous guest appearances before officially signing to Priority Records and dropping his debut, “Word on tha Streets” in 1998.
Bad Azz followed it up in 2001 by releasing the album “Personal Business” which featured Snoop Dogg and Kokane along with lil 1/2 Dead on the lead single “Wrong Idea.” He continuou…

The R.O.C. – “Monsters Ain’t Real” (EP Review)

Image
The R.O.C. is a horrorcore veteran from Detroit, Michigan who got his start as a member of the House of Krazees with Jamie Madrox & Monoxide. When the latter 2 went onto form the duo Twiztid & sign with Psychopathic Records, The R.O.C. hooked up with Skrapz to put out 1 last album under the HOK name before starting a duo of their own called HaLFBrEEd. Although they would only release 1 official album under the HaLFBrEEd name titled Kontamination, it would go on to become a horrorcore classic. Then in 2008, he signed to Psychopathic’s now defunct Hatchet House sub-label & put out his Welcome to the Darkside EP before “retiring” the following year. Eventually, The R.O.C. returned to making music in 2012 & signed to Majik Ninja Entertainment in 2014. His long awaited 3rd album Digital Voodoo finally saw the light of day in 2017 & would go down as his magnum opus in my personal opinion but 2 & a half years later, he’s treating fans with his 6th EP.After the “Have S…

Onyx & Snowgoons – “SnowMads” (Album Review)

Image
Onyx is a revered hip hop duo from Queens, New York consisting of Sticky Fingaz & Fredro Starr. Their first 3 albums BacdafucupAll We Got Iz Us & Shut ‘Em Down are rightfully considered by many to be East Coast classics. They went on to release 2 mediocre albums in the early 2000s before going AWOL, returning in 2014 with the Snowgoons produced #WAKEDAFUCUP. This was followed up early last year with the long-lost Black Rock but with Thanksgiving around the corner, they’re getting back with the Snowgoons to deliver a follow-up to the album that returned them to form. After the intro, the first song “Who da Fuc?” finds Sticky & Fredro challenging their opponents over a boom bap beat with some suspenseful string sections. The next track “Robbing Hip Hop” with Bumpy Knuckles & NEMS sees the 4 comparing taking the game back to a burglary over a frightening instrumental while the song “Monsters Gorillas” with V Knuckles sees the 3 talking about being stone-cold killers over…

Q&A Interview with Detroit’s Very Own DJ Clay

Image
What is the earliest hip hop memory that you can recall? The earliest I can recall is freestyle mixtapes from local DJs & other DJs like Uncle Luke, DJ Godfather, then the Beastie Boys & Cypress Hill all on cassette or vinyl. How did the moniker Clay come about?Clay was no gimmick. It’s my middle name & while I was like 11 years old trying to come up with all these what I thought were cool DJ names such as DJ Suicidal & crazy shit like that, one day after I told my parents what I wanted to do my mom was like “What’re you gonna go by, DJ Clay?” & I was like “Actually, yeah I am.” Everybody always called me Clay in my neighborhood, school, family, never by my first name (Michael) so why not go by what everybody was already calling me? It worked out perfect. Not only are you a talented producer & DJ, but you’re also an MC. So I wanna know: which one were you doing first? It kinda all fell in play at once. I’d battle rap homies at house parties, but never took it too s…

Sidero Records: The Movie By Jhantu Randall

Image
On November 3rd a small crowd gathered at the Rumba Notes Lounge in Seattle to attend the public premiere of Roc Walker’s movie, Sidero Records. The turnout was decent as some members of the cast showed up people began networking as the drinks flowed freely and the catering hit the spot. First and foremost, I have to admit that this article may sound bias as I know quite a few of the people in this project so in many ways I want this to come off as a celebration of how far I’ve seen their grind take em.

The movie is a wrap up of Roc’s web series under the same name so with an extended run time of about 2 hours, the film has the freedom to expand on the story. All self funded, Roc reached out and got many local Seattle actors and actresses who were untrained but that feeds into the authenticity of the project overall. While the camera cuts may be a bit rough as most of the story is told through phone calls between the characters (All whom kept their actual names) once you get passed t…

Kut One, Neek the Exotic & Nine – “The Icons Series, Vols. 1 & 2” (EP Review)

Image
Kut One is a producer from Melbourne, Australia & this is the inaugural installment of a series of EPs celebrating the grimier side of underground hip hop. We got Kut paying homage to Queens veteran Neek the Exotic on the first half & then to Bronx titan Nine on the other. The opener “Welcome to Violence” with Kool G Rap & Royal Flush sees the 3 delivering grim bars in their own unique styles over a sinister instrumental then the next song “We Do It” reclaims his prowess over a high-pitched soul sample. The track “Everything’s on Course” with Large Professor sees the 2 talking about their longevity over a boom bap beat with some luxurious keyboards & then the final Neek song “I Don’t Know” talks about the culture being his life over a blissful instrumental. Then we get into the second half with “Basquiat”, where Nine talks about his craft over a woozy beat. The next song “When Ah Pull Up” gets into the mind of a criminal over a suspenseful instrumental while the track “M…
